Jailbreak!

ok, the weekend just gone was jailbreak, and i and tessa participated. heres what happened.

Before jailbreak started Tessa asked the people at temple meads if they could help us, but they told her that they couldn't and were clamping down on it this year and not letting anyone through the barriers. But they said that if we got on at one of the small stations could get behind the barriers then we would just need to deal with the train people. So we decided to start our journey at clifton down. We looked up the train times and there was a train leaving at 9:08am, and we were to be released from the union at 9:00am so i decided we would ride my bike to the station so we could make it time. This was the extent of our planning. On saturday morning we were released exactly on 9 and we rushed out and made aur way to the station with tessa standing on the back. We arrived at 9:07 just in time for the train. unfortunately, the ticket man was really mean and he wouldn't let us stay on and we got kicked off at redland :/ After that we went to the bus station on foot. We asked there if they could take us anywhere but they said we have to ring national express, so we did and they said we couldn't travel for 'insurance reasons' :( but the people at the station did seem to want to help though. We decided to go to lawrence hill as that was the last stop before Temple meads and they couldn't kick us off before then. On our way we passed through the broadmead and Tessa saw the bus which goes to Lawrence Hill. We begged the bus driver to help us and he did! So we got a free ride to lawrence hill. When we got there we were kinda lost as to where the station was and we asked someone who showed us where it was. When we got there we met a trainspotter who informed us that we had just missed a train :( we went to the shop and got some supplies. back at the train station the trainspotter was really helpful, we were worried about meeting the mean ticket man again, but he told us that the next train wouldn't be the same one that we were kicked off, he also told us that the next train will probably be late because of the rugby and it was! the train finally arrive over 15 mins late and it was a different one to before and there was no mean ticket guy. We got off at temple meads and after a trip to the loo, we got onto the next train to Reading. we sat down somewhere in the middle, i was constantly looking out for the ticket man. just before Swindon i saw him making his was down the isle in the next carriage and we decided to get up and do something. We stood up and moved towards him, I was initially going to go straight passed him but I saw some toilets and we hid in them instead. When we left the toilets we were passed Swindon and we didn't see the ticket man again. We got off at Reading to change for a train to Redhill. It was a small train so we couldn't hide here and after 2 stops we saw the ticket man comnig down the isle. With our past experience with ticket men, and the abundance of warning penalty posters, we got scared and got off at the next stop before he got to us. We were now in crowthorn. We were thinking of trying to hitch and wait for the next train at the same time. We walked down the street, trying to hitch to Redhill but with no luck. We ask a lady standing on the other side of the road for help. She recomended we try to hitch to Sandhurst as it was much closer than Redhill and more people were likely to be going there. So we made a sign for Sandhurst and shortly after someone gave us a lift! We walked to Sandhurst station holing up a sign saying 'EAST please!' but no luck this time. We got on the next train from Sandhurst luckily there was no ticket man. we got off at the last stop which was Shalford. The next train wasn't for ages so i went to the toilet in the pub and we had a drink. We spoke to some people in the pub about where the best place to hitchhike would be around here after explaining what we were doing. We went to try hitchhike, but again no luck. but there was a bus stop with buses going to Redhill. When the next bus came, the doors opened and literally all we managed to say was "hi, we're from bristol uni, and were doing this charity jailbreak thing..." before he interupted us and asked us where we wanted to go and told us to go sit down! It took a while but we got to Redhill eventually. We crossed the road to Redhill train station and saw that they had barriers :( wondering what to do we explained our situation to the man at the gate, he told us to see the manager on platform 2 and let us through! After a half hearted attempt to look for this manager, we just got on the next train to Tonbridge.
This time we decided just to try talk again to the ticket guy. It worked and he let us stay on! :) we changed at tonbridge to Ashford international, we didn't see a ticket guy on this one ^_^ the trains between ashford and Folkestone were being replaced by a bus so we thought we'd have to blag our way onto the bus, but when we got there they didn't ask for our tickets or anything so we got on and went to folkestone. In Folkestone we went to the bus station to try to find out more information on the channel tunnel, like where it was... but everything was closed :( we talked to some people who pointed us in the right direction. We saw the road signs to the tunnel and started following them. We followed them for quite a while and the area got more and more remote, it was freezing and the only places we saw to stay were miles back where we came from. but i was stubborn and wouldn't turn back, (sorry Tessa) Luckily though we came upon one of those Premier Travel Inns and we decided to stay there the night. we left the next morning at 8:15ish and carried on our walk towards the tunnel. when we were nearly there we found out that they had security stopping people hitchhiking through the tunnel :( so we decided to go to dover to catch a ferry. I made a sign for Dover, and just after 5-10mins we were picked up by these nice french couple and dropped off right outside Dover ferry port thingy. We spoke to the people at seafrance but they couldn't help us. Then we went to P&O ferries, the guy behind the counter was really nice, and so was the lady in the counter next to him, we explained our situation and the lady remember a deal in a newspaper which was a day trip for £1 the guy behind the counter bought us our tickets for us And gave us a voucher for a free bottle of wine! We took the ferry to Calais. When we got there it seemed so empty and remote it was a little worrying. The layout of Calais is stupid. Its so difficult just to walk out of the ferry port. anyway, we went to the train station in Calais to see if they'd give us any free tickets to anywhere, but unfortunately not. After trying to hitch to Paris for ages we decided to give up and make our way home.

so thats it, we got to Calais. maximum distance 197.68 miles as the crow flies between the Students Union in bristol and Rue du Nord in Calais.
